A Comparative Experimental Study on Gastric Retention of the Full - term Newborn Infants in Several Body - positions

Abstract
To find out the most ideal position for infants after feeding, especially for the infants who regurgitate or vomit frequently, author studied the effects of resting positi3ns on gastric retention in 60 full - term newborn infants aged 24 hours to 96 hours.
All infants were delivered at the Seoul National University Hospital from November 5, 1978 to February 17, 1979 and met the following criteria for normal full- term newborn ; gestational age ranged from 38 weeks to 42 weeks, birth weight ranged. from 2500.gm to 4000 gm, Apgar score of 7 or more, no evidence of congenital malformation, birth injuryor infection.
These 60 infants were divided into 4 groups by random sampling. All infants of each group were tested in supine position for control, and in one of the other positions (prone, semi- sitting, right lateral, left lateral). 60 ml of 15% modified milk was given by tube 3 hours after the last feeding.
After 20 minutes and 40 minutes, the gastric contents were aspirated.
The data were analized statistically by means of the t - test and F - ratio.
Under the 8 hypotheses designed for the study, the findings obtained are as follows;
1. There was no significant difference in the retention of the milk between sex in supine position; in 20 mins male 39.71m1, female 43.47m1, in 40 mins male 37.07m1, female 40.31m1.
2. There was no significant difference in the retention of the milk between mother¢¥s parity in supine position; in 20 mins primi 40.33m1, multi 42.97m1, in 40 mins primi 37.93 ml, multi 39.64m1.
3. There was no significant difference in the retention of the milk between each delivery route in supine position; in 20 mins % 42.81m1, vaginal delivery 40.25m1, in 40 mins C/s 40.36m1, vaginal delivery 36.63ml.
4. There was no significant difference in the retention of the milk between supine and prone position; in 20 mins supine 42.60ml, prone 37.07m1, in 40 thins supine 39.93m1, prone 36.60m1.
5 There was no significant difference in the retention of the milk between supine and semi-sitting Position; in 20 mins¢¥supine 42.33m1, semi-sitting 38.07m1, in 40 mins supine 39.27m1, semi-sitting 35.60ml.
6. Significant difference gastric retention between supine and right lateral was disclosed in 20 mins; supine 41.07m1, right lateral 33.33m] Position
But there was no significant difference in 40 mires ? ( P< 0.05). ml. supine 38.07m1, right lateral 31.60
7. There was no significant difference in. the retention of the milk between supine and left lateral Position; in 20mins supine 41.13m1, left lateral 44.93m1, in 40mins supine 38.20m1, left lateral 42.13ml.
8. Significant difference was revealed in the retention of the milk according to 4 test position in 20 mins (p< 0.05 ), but there was no significant difference in the gastric retention in 40 mins.
